Great but is Amazon ready for anywhere else besides the USA
BUYERS OUTSIDE USA BEWARE: AMAZON ONLY ACCEPTS USA CREDIT CARDS FOR APP PURCHASES.. Read on if you are interested: Setup of this great little tablet was easy and my existing books from my iPhone, PC and Mac apps synced seemlessly when I entered my Amazon user name etc. Suddenly all my books including the last page I opened to on one of my other devices, were all right there. Love that! I did all this in a cafe using my iPhone's personal hotspot as the Kindle's wifi connection. The tablet itself is well built, and great to use.. I have nothing but praise for it, except it could do with 1GB of RAM, and I have no idea why Amazon thought it would be best to go with 512. The difficulties started when we tried to install apps from the app store. "This purchase is not available from your region" Oh dear! Well, I tried to set up my VPN to allow it to be run from "inside America" but VPN setup is blocked/restricted. I tried to install some apps from other sources, BLOCKED. I tried to visit Android Market.. (permanently redirected to Amazon app store) I bought a book, and it worked!.. Here's my confusion: Why would Hong Kong, and I'm sure almost all other countries around the planet minus USA, be allowed to buy books and magazines, but not apps. CRAZY! So, I setup my DDWRT router and put my whole network on a USA VPN.. "Your credit card is not authorized for purchases as it is a non-US card" That was it, my frustrations ran High, I wrote to Amazon to ask when we would be able to actually purchase apps any time soon, and they said there was no time-frame. So, I had no choice but to root (gain admin access and bypass some restrictions) the device and side-load all the apps I wanted on there or by installing GetJar and then using their app to download then setup games, note taking and office apps etc. I wasn't even able to complete the purchase of, or upgrade, Quickoffice which comes pre-installed. Overall, I'm impressed with the price, the style, the user friendliness of it.. but the inability for me to purchase apps but ability to buy books, is a strange one, and hopefully something Amazon fixes, and soon! If you are prepared to root the device and get free, legal, apps from GetJar or something similar, then buy a Kindle and hope Amazon will wake up to the existence of a planet outside the US, then this is for you. But I'm afraid that by the time they do this, the new wave of much higher spec and even lower priced tablets will be on our doors (I know they are on the way second quarter 2012) with the ability to buy apps from Android Market and download the Kindle app for reading the books, will be here.
